After the powder mills ceased operations in 1921, the property was obtained by a great-great-granddaughter of their found er, Mrs. Francis B. Crowninshield, who re stored the residence. The former garden site became part of a sheep pasture. This was the situation when the property was turned over to the Eleutherian Mills-Hag ley Foundation in 1952.
